Best yoga in Ponsonby and Grey Lynn 2026: a local's honest guide

The inner west has the most concentrated yoga scene in Auckland, and three studios are doing it brilliantly. Eastwest Yoga on Ponsonby Road is the city’s enduring hot yoga home and the best place in town for the classic Bikram 26+2 sequence. Sala on Brown Street is the most beautifully run multidisciplinary movement studio in the city, where yoga sits alongside reformer pilates, barre and a sauna. The Yoga Ground on Surrey Crescent in Grey Lynn is the warmest welcome for beginners in Auckland, anchored by Kara Sweney’s six-week Introduction To Yoga course. Add HUM Yoga (formerly Basecamp) in Grey Lynn for award-winning interior design and serious power yoga, and you have one of the best half-square-kilometres of yoga real estate in the country.

For design-led calm without the heat, Kenkō Studios in Eden Terrace is a five-minute drive over the hill and worth it. But Ponsonby and Grey Lynn hold their own.

The inner west field

Eastwest Yoga, 26a Ponsonby Road

Auckland’s enduring hot yoga home, run by mother-daughter Sheryn and Amelia. The Ponsonby studio has been operating for nearly two decades, which in this market is close to forever. Classes include the classic 26+2 (90 minutes, 38 to 40 degrees), Hot Hatha, Power Vinyasa, Yin, Yin Yang and Ashtanga. The room is functional rather than beautiful, and the focus is squarely on the practice. The vibe is famously low-pretension. There is a second outpost at 489 Khyber Pass Road in Newmarket. Not on ClassPass.

Sala Studio, Brown Street, Ponsonby

The most beautifully run multidisciplinary movement studio in Auckland. Founder Sarah Lindsay arrived from London in 2017 and opened in a refurbished factory the following year. Yoga is the foundation, but the studio also runs reformer pilates, barre, HIIT and (since the 2024 expansion) a sauna and weights room. Sarah’s own yoga classes are the draw. The teacher training is one of the most respected 200-hour programmes in the country. Complimentary Lululemon mats. On ClassPass.

The Yoga Ground, 56 Surrey Crescent, Grey Lynn

The warmest welcome in Auckland yoga and the best place for an absolute beginner. Owner Kara Sweney has built a studio with over 25 classes a week across Vinyasa, Hatha, Yin, Restorative, YG Strength and Somatics. The studio is set down a side alley behind the Isaac apartments, with bamboo floors, high stud and city views. The six-week Introduction To Yoga course at $169 is the most thoughtfully structured beginner programme in the city. Free street parking on Surrey Crescent. On ClassPass with a 4.8 rating from over a thousand reviewers.

HUM Yoga (formerly Basecamp), 5b/18 Westmoreland Street West, Grey Lynn

The city’s most architecturally beautiful yoga building. The studio formerly known as Basecamp Power Yoga won the Interior Awards NZ 2020 Health and Wellness Space category for the Studio 11:11 fit-out — refined timber joinery, exposed off-form concrete and a natural cork main studio floor that feels genuinely lovely underfoot. Basecamp was sold and rebranded as HUM Yoga, now anchored by Kirsty van de Geer of Sundar Yoga. The room is the same; the brand, schedule and teaching identity are still settling. ClassPass listed. Ozone Coffee is next door, which is dangerous for post-practice intentions.

Yoga Aotearoa, The Button Factory

Just over the boundary into Freemans Bay but easily within walking distance from K Road. Slow Flow, Vinyasa, Yin Yang and Candlelight Yin with Sound Bath. Warm, unpretentious and 5.0 on ClassPass.
