Achel Hot Yoga.

Achel is the studio that survived. Most Auckland Bikram studios rebranded or closed after the Choudhury scandals broke; Achel, on Level 1 of Botany Town Centre, kept teaching the classic ninety-minute sequence at full heat and is now sixteen years into operation. Owner Ellen Adoko was trained directly by Bikram Choudhury in Los Angeles in the early years. The studio at 588 Chapel Road runs about twenty-nine sessions a week across six class styles, and the people who go to it have, in many cases, been going for a decade.

The owner

Ellen Adoko is Ugandan-born and arrived in New Zealand in 1999. She trained directly with Bikram in Los Angeles, taught in the UK and Australia, and chose the name Achel because it means “one” or “union.” Achel Hot Yoga opened in September 2009 at 272a Ti Rakau Drive in Pakuranga and later moved to Botany Town Centre. That makes the studio roughly sixteen years old, longer than the “ten-plus” framing that gets used in older write-ups.

The space

Level 1 of “The Lane” inside Botany Town Centre — a mall setting, which is part of the studio’s character. You walk up an escalator, past a food court, and into a hot-yoga studio with a lounge of couches and magazines at the front, a water cooler, and separate men’s and women’s bathrooms with showers. The setting is honest: this is not chic, it is not boutique, it is a long-running neighbourhood hot studio inside a mall with covered parking below. For East Auckland that is exactly what it should be.

The classes

The studio advertises six class styles and twenty-nine sessions a week across roughly six days. Friday is the rest day, which is unusual — confirm against the live timetable before booking.

  • Bikram-style Hot Yoga — both 60- and 90-minute versions of the classic sequence, taught traditionally
  • Inferno Hot Pilates — HIIT-pilates fusion in heat; the format matches the licensed Inferno Hot Pilates brand created by Gabriella Walters, though I have not verified the licensing badge directly
  • Vinyasa — flow at a moderate temperature
  • Yin — long-hold passive postures
  • Stretch — a gentle class for new starters that the studio uses as the easiest on-ramp

Pricing

The published rates are not surfacing cleanly from the current pricing page (the page loads dynamically). The widely-referenced drop-in figure is $26, but I cannot confirm this against the live page. What I can confirm from reviewers: a $3 mat hire fee that some find steep relative to other Bikram studios.

Intro offer, packs and memberships exist on the official pricing page but specifics are best confirmed by phone or in person.

What people say

ClassPass review themes, from the small sample I could read: friendly and welcoming, teachers all wonderful, transformational, intimate, best yoga studio in NZ. One reviewer who has been going for six years used that last phrase. The “loyal community” framing genuinely holds up — the studio’s profile is built on long-term regulars rather than newcomer churn. Two specific criticisms recur: the $3 mat-hire surcharge, and the locked-door policy at class start (one reviewer wrote about almost being locked out).

Honest criticisms

Small things that come up in reviews. The $3 mat hire on top of the $26 drop-in is a recurring grumble for casual visitors. The mall-adjacent setting at Botany Town Centre lacks the destination feel some practitioners want from a hot studio, and parking at the mall is a hunt during peak retail hours. The studio is a real drive from central or western Auckland. Friday closure is unusual among Auckland hot studios. The Bikram Choudhury lineage isn’t acknowledged publicly on the studio’s site, which some prospective students raise. A handful of reviews mention an instructor experience that felt brusque.

Practical

Free covered parking in Botany Town Centre — by far the easiest mall-yoga experience in greater Auckland. Reviewers do warn to leave plenty of time to find a park near peak retail hours. Te Irirangi Drive and Chapel Road bus stops are nearby; the AT 70 and frequent East Auckland services run there. There is no train.

Who it’s for

East Auckland locals who do not want to drive to the CBD; Bikram traditionalists who want a studio teaching the original sequence at the original temperature; anyone wanting an unpretentious neighbourhood hot studio with a teacher who learnt the practice from the source. The kind of practitioner who has been going to the same room for a decade and would not change it.

It is less the right fit for first-time hot-yoga students wanting a softer introduction (the $30 / 30-day intro at HIYOGA is a gentler on-ramp), boutique-aesthetic seekers, or anyone uncomfortable with the cultural legacy of Bikram Choudhury (Ellen’s studio is a long way removed, but the lineage is real).
