Redroom Wellness is the chicest place to sweat in Auckland, and it is no longer really a yoga studio. The current programme is infrared-heated pilates, strength and HIIT (Thermo Tone, Thermo Sculpt, Thermo HIIT) with a single Yin yoga class on the timetable. Lower level of City Works Depot, the converted-warehouse hospitality precinct on Wellesley Street West, with a class room lit a deep, dry red — infrared heat, not humid steam — and a recovery suite of red-light therapy panels you can book straight after class. Founder Dominique Francis opened the CBD studio on 13 September 2024 and has since added a North Shore outpost in Takapuna with an infrared sauna and an ice bath. If you want infrared pilates and recovery rather than yoga, this is the room.

The founder

Dominique Francis built Redroom after buying “one of her most-loved studios” — fitness has been central to her life, and the rebuild is in her image: female-owned, female-skewing, hospitality-grade, with a curated retail edit she selected personally. NZ Herald has profiled her on her experience of pursuing motherhood through ten rounds of IVF and surrogacy; she is reportedly scouting a Queenstown site for a third studio.

The CBD room

Unit 15 on the lower level of 90 Wellesley Street West, inside the City Works Depot precinct. Press coverage describes a single class studio lit by red lights with a pumping soundtrack, a lounge at the front for pre- and post-class, and chic changing rooms with thoughtful product selection. The heat is dry infrared radiant, not humid hot — this is the meaningful difference from every other hot studio in the city. The temperature is intentionally not posted; it pushes hard but it feels cleaner than steam-heated rooms because there is no humidity. Twelve full-body red-light therapy panels live in a separate booking suite for post-class recovery.

The Takapuna outpost

40 Hurstmere Road, configured as two studios: a heated Pilates room and a dedicated contrast-therapy room with private infrared sauna sessions and ice-bath sessions. Yoga, HIIT and strength formats are not at Takapuna — the North Shore membership is Pilates plus recovery only. If you live on the Shore and want the dry-heat yoga, the CBD is the answer.

The classes

All classes run in the infrared-heated room. The current naming on the website is settling — third-party coverage references some older class names that have shifted. The programme is overwhelmingly pilates, strength and HIIT under the Thermo branding; Thermo Yin is the only yoga class on the timetable.

  • Thermo Tone — heated strength with weights
  • Thermo Sculpt — Pilates with weights for sculpting
  • Thermo HIIT — high-intensity intervals fused with Pilates structure
  • Thermo Yin — passive long-hold Yin yoga in the heat, designed for fascia work and deep flexibility
  • Red Hot Yoga — heated flow
  • Thermo Fusion Yoga — listed in some third-party coverage; verify on the live timetable

ClassPass reviewers single out instructor energy by name and the post-class feel-good factor.

Red Light Therapy

A separate booking, fifteen dollars per ten-minute session, in a suite using PowerPanel Elite XL units (NZ Herald): 600 mW/cm² output, optimised wavelengths, low EMF. The therapeutic claims sit around muscle recovery, circulation, inflammation and cellular repair. Red light cannot penetrate clothing — you need skin exposure for the benefit.

The retail edit

Curated personally by Dominique at the CBD location: SRW Laboratories supplements, Skincycles cosmeceutical skincare, Embodyme, Prochaine, Liquid Lightening cold-pressed juices (Dominique’s signature is the “Better Than Botox” press) and Breakfast Babes raw vegan treats. It is the only Auckland yoga studio where the retail wall is genuinely a destination in its own right.

What people say

Press themes are consistent: chic aesthetic, dry-not-humid heat, integrated recovery, hospitality-grade service. Search-surfaced ClassPass excerpts praise instructor energy and the challenge level. Google’s rating is not publicly visible in the searches I could run, so the consolidated score is a gap; if it matters to you, ask the studio directly.

Honest criticisms

What recurs in Google reviews and press. The pricing is premium for Auckland: about $100 a week for CBD unlimited, $35 casual drop-in, plus $15 per ten minutes for the Red Light Therapy panels, which adds up. The infrared heat is drier and reads noticeably cooler than humid Bikram-style rooms, which catches practitioners coming from HIYOGA or Eastwest off-guard. Pregnant members are excluded from heated group classes entirely. There’s no published phone number; contact runs through email only. The class names (Thermo Tone, Sculpt, HIIT, Fusion) aren’t obviously different to first-timers and the site doesn’t help.

Practical

City Works Depot has its own paid parking around the back; meters on Wellesley West and Sale Street are options. Britomart, Aotea (CRL) and Karangahape (CRL) are all walking distance. Takapuna is on Hurstmere Road in the heart of the strip — paid parking on Anzac and Killarney, Shore City offers two hours free with shopping.

Who it’s for

People who find humid hot yoga claustrophobic and want dry infrared instead; recovery-minded movers who want red-light therapy, sauna and ice in one trip; aesthetic-driven Aucklanders for whom the lounge, the retail edit and the changing rooms genuinely matter; women seeking a female-led, female-skewing room; CBD professionals near Wellesley West, and Shore residents wanting Pilates with contrast therapy on one membership.

It is not the right room for anyone pregnant; anyone wanting budget-friendly drop-ins; men looking for a male-coded gym vibe; humid hot-yoga purists who want true Bikram steam (go to Eastwest Yoga or HIYOGA); or anyone wanting a full yoga-philosophy or Ashtanga-style practice (this is fitness-forward, not lineage yoga — go to Auckland Yoga Academy for that).
