Sala is not really a yoga studio. It is closer to a wellness clubhouse — two levels of refurbished factory on Brown Street, Ponsonby, with three named movement rooms, a healing studio, a concept store, a koha-coffee co-working area, an infrared sauna and an ice bath, all under one membership. Founder Sarah Lindsay arrived in Auckland from the London boutique-fitness world and opened Sala in 2018. Eight years in, it runs about eighty classes a week across yoga, reformer pilates, barre, HIIT, mobility, sound healing, contrast therapy and a slightly intimidating interval-training format. If you want yoga as one part of a broader movement practice, this is the most coherent answer in Auckland.
The founder
Sarah Lindsay spent roughly a decade in the London boutique-fitness scene before relocating to Auckland and opening Sala “less than a year into living in Auckland” (her interview with Woman+). Yoga is the pivot point — she calls it “the doorway into myself.” Her tagline, “be kind but take no shit,” is on her own About page. She has been profiled by Woman+, Remix, Citta, Idealog, Broadsheet, Concrete Playground and featured in Auckland Design Week, which is a long way of saying she has been recognised for building something genuinely good. The studio is now Yoga Alliance accredited for its two-hundred-hour Yoga Teacher Training.
The space
The interior fit-out is by designer Mijntje Lepoutre across two levels of a refurbished factory at 46 Brown Street. Three named rooms:
- Eclipse Room — Auckland’s largest reformer pilates studio, with sixteen Technogym reformer beds
- Solar Room — the yoga room: soft cork flooring (not wood, despite the assumption many people make), with a custom colour-shifting light installation by Angus Muir
- Sunset Room — barre, strength, cardio
Plus a healing and massage room, the concept store at the front, and a communal co-working area with long wooden tables and koha Kōkako coffee. The wellness offering is its own line:
- Hot Room — a two-person Clearlight infrared sauna with red-light pillars (forty-minute sessions)
- Hot + Cold Room — a four-person Clearlight infrared sauna plus an ice bath (fifty-five-minute sessions)
Showers come with natural product, hair dryers, lockers, and complimentary thick Lululemon mats are at the door of every class.
The classes
About twelve disciplines, eighty-plus classes a week.
- Yoga: Flow, Dynamic (sweaty, music-led), Yogasana (fast, structured), Yin
- Reformer: Basics, Flow, Strength, Cardio (the cardio uses the jump-board, which is a workout)
- Barre
- HIIT Pilates
- Power Pilates — mat with weights
- Mobility
- Sound Healing — forty-five minutes
- Interval Training — colour-coded Yellow (upper body), Blue (full body) and Red (lower body) on treadmills and weights
Class lengths beyond Sound Healing are not consistently published; check the live timetable. Reviewers single out Jade (reformer, Friday evenings) more than any other teacher.
The teachers
Beyond Sarah, the publicly listed faculty includes Eridani Baker (who also teaches at Kenkō Studios), Kirsty van de Geer, Otto Prodan (anatomy lead in the YTT), and Monica Cronin (philosophy lead). Jade is the most-named teacher in reviews.
Pricing
The model is a credit system on a four-month minimum membership, which is a real lock-in but predictable once you’re in.
- Intro pack: $50 for five credits over fourteen days, sauna included
- Energy membership: $95 a month (standard tier, four-month minimum)
- Yoga Only membership: $110 a month (four-month minimum)
- Credit values: $12 standard, $19 “all” (premium classes)
- Sauna add-on: 2 credits per session
- Hot + Cold Contrast: 3 credits per session
- Bring-a-friend sauna: +$15
All memberships require a four-month minimum. On ClassPass at 4.9 stars across more than one thousand ratings.
The Yoga Teacher Training
Yoga Alliance accredited, two hundred hours. Next cohort scheduled 2 April to 16 June 2027, run as six weekends — Fridays 4:30 to 8:30 pm, Saturdays and Sundays 10 am to 7:30 pm. Faculty: Sarah Lindsay (lead), Otto Prodan (anatomy), Monica Cronin (philosophy). Pricing: $3,000 early-bird in full, $3,200 deposit-plus-installments, $3,900 standard. Includes twenty studio classes. $500 non-refundable deposit.
What people say
The numbers are unusually consistent: 4.9 on ClassPass (1,000-plus ratings), 4.8 on Google (around 324 reviews), 4.9 on a third-party aggregator (around 225). The phrases recur: calming environment, kind souls, beautifully designed, indulgent, well-maintained Technogym equipment, instructors who genuinely care. Jade gets named more than anyone else; Sarah’s own classes get named regularly.
Honest criticisms
What recurs in Google and ClassPass feedback. The strict no-late-entry policy turns paid-up members away for arriving a few minutes late, with no exceptions even for first-time visitors unfamiliar with the Brown Street entry. The $5 late-cancel fee inside twelve hours is described as sharp given how quickly Auckland schedules shift. The 16-bed Eclipse reformer room is repeatedly booked out days ahead, and even when you get a spot the room reads packed at peak slots. The credit system (sauna two credits, ice bath three credits, etc.) takes some figuring out. The four-month membership minimum is a real lock-in.
Practical
Ponsonby Central underground car park at 8 Brown Street has roughly eighty spaces, thirty minutes free then $3.50 per thirty minutes; the early-bird at $19.50 is good if you can be in by 10 am. Auckland Transport is introducing evening paid parking in central Ponsonby — confirm before you turn up after work. The InnerLink bus stops outside Ponsonby Central, two minutes’ walk from Sala.
Who it’s for
Ponsonby and Grey Lynn locals who want yoga, reformer, recovery and a co-working couch on one membership. Design-led, community-oriented women in their late twenties through forties (this is genuinely who fills the room). Anyone tired of choosing between studios. Anyone who would happily spend a Sunday morning doing reformer then sauna then matcha at Kōkako without leaving the building.
It is less the right room for drop-in flexibility seekers (the four-month minimum is a hard sell), strict-traditional-yoga purists (this is movement-studio yoga, music-led, blended — Auckland Yoga Academy is the answer for traditional Ashtanga), anyone who runs late, or anyone wanting a budget-friendly entry point (try The Yoga Ground or HIYOGA’s intro deals).
