Yoga during pregnancy in Auckland: choosing a class
Modified yoga can be an option during an uncomplicated pregnancy. Discuss your practice with your midwife or obstetrician, especially if you have complications or are starting something new. ACOG’s pregnancy exercise guidance includes modified yoga and recommends avoiding hot yoga and hot Pilates because of overheating.
The Auckland studios doing prenatal yoga properly are Golden Yogi, Kanuka Yoga Space, Auckland Yoga Academy, Unity Studios Balmoral and Kenkō (Mums and Babies Yoga Restore postnatal). Hot studios including Eastwest, HIYOGA, Sweat, Redroom and Achel explicitly do not allow heated classes during pregnancy.
Why prenatal yoga is different
Pregnancy changes your body in specific ways that yoga needs to accommodate:
Joint changes can make overstretching and injury more likely. Work with a teacher who can adapt the practice.
Balance changes as pregnancy progresses. Choose supported movements and avoid positions with a risk of falling.
Heat and position matter. Avoid hot classes and prolonged time lying flat on your back in later pregnancy. Stay hydrated and stop if you feel too hot or unwell. NHS guidance on exercise in pregnancy
Comfort changes. Your teacher should offer modifications rather than encourage you to push through discomfort.
A prenatal class can make it easier to find suitable modifications. The class label alone does not guarantee that a session suits your individual pregnancy.
Choosing a suitable practice
Tell your teacher that you are pregnant and discuss any advice from your maternity team. Ask about their prenatal training and how they adapt the class.
Adjust your practice as your comfort and balance change. A trimester number is not a personal medical clearance.
Check suitability with your maternity team and teacher rather than treating a generic pose list as a prescription.
Auckland studios for prenatal yoga
Golden Yogi, Takapuna
Dedicated Pregnancy Yoga classes throughout the week. The teaching is experienced and the studio is calm. Plus the naturopath clinic on site for broader pregnancy support.
Kanuka Yoga Space, Hobsonville
Prenatal yoga and Mums and Bubs (postnatal) classes. The Kanuka teachers have specific prenatal training. Wheelchair accessible if mobility is a factor.
Auckland Yoga Academy, Federal Street
Yoga for Expectant Mothers classes. The traditional teaching style adapts well to pregnancy with experienced teachers.
Unity Studios, Balmoral
A women’s health focused studio with prenatal yoga and pelvic wellbeing classes. Worth knowing about for the specialised focus.
Kenkō Studios, Eden Terrace
Mums and Babies Yoga Restore and Mums and Babies Pilates Restore are postnatal options. Confirm the current timetable and ask about suitability; a regular Flow Yoga class is not automatically a prenatal class.
Studios to avoid during pregnancy
Hot yoga studios should not be attended in heated classes during pregnancy:
- Eastwest Yoga (hot classes)
- HIYOGA (hot classes)
- Sweat Yoga (hot classes)
- Redroom Wellness (explicitly excludes pregnant clients from infrared classes; offers private PT instead)
- Achel Hot Yoga (hot classes)
For non-heated classes, discuss suitability with your maternity team and the studio.
What to look for in a prenatal class
- The teacher has specific prenatal training (most studios will note this in the teacher bio)
- Class size is small (under 12 students)
- The teacher modifies postures specifically for pregnancy
- The teacher respects advice from your maternity team
- The teacher checks in with you about your week
- Other pregnant women are in the class (community is part of the benefit)
When to stop
If you have any complications including bleeding, severe nausea, high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, placenta previa or threatened preterm labour, get medical clearance before continuing yoga. Talk to your midwife or obstetrician.
Postnatal return to yoga
Returning to exercise depends on your recovery, delivery and any complications. Ask your maternity team when a yoga class is appropriate, particularly after a Caesarean birth. Start gradually and stop if it hurts. ACOG’s postnatal exercise guidance
